Why Store Food?

In this modern age of supermarkets and fast food restaurants, many people do not realize the importance of storing their own food and water supplies. This does not mean stocking up on TV dinners from the frozen foods section though, since a power loss will render those meals inedible. Having an ample supply of food can keep you and your family safe in the event of a power loss, natural disaster or other emergency. Simply put - storing food can be the difference between safety and starvation.

Having a supply of food can give people peace of mind before an emergency, and keep them fed and healthy during a famine, drought or other disaster. There are other reasons to have a store of food besides natural disasters though. Even if a home survives a disaster with no damage, stores may be sold out of food as others rush to fill their pantries. Human error can lead to contaminated food in supermarkets or unsafe drinking water, requiring people to rely on themselves until the stores can be restocked. Even if there is not a run on the supermarkets or food is not contaminated, it is helpful to have food ready in case you are ill and cannot leave to shop or are otherwise unable to get to a supermarket or have food delivered.

Earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, snowstorms, power outages, fires and tornadoes can strand people for days or weeks without help or outside supplies, leaving them dependent on what is in their homes. People that have prepared and stored food and water will be able to ride that time out without having to live meager rations of the same meal for weeks and will be able to keep themselves healthy through a stressful time.

Even people that believe they do not live in an area prone to natural disasters should store food. Disasters can strike anywhere and at anytime with little to no warning, so waiting until there is an imminent threat may be too late. By that point, most stores will be stripped bare of essentials and it will be too late to prepare. Storing food is also good insurance against a loss of income or unemployment - an all too common problem with the current economic recession.

Depending on the needs of the family, there are several options when it comes to storing food. The Mountain House 72 Hour Emergency Meal Kit is ideal for people that are just beginning to prepare for disasters or only need to have enough food for a few days, while the Harvest 10 Pack Food Supply can supply 10 full grown adults for one year. There are plenty of options in between to help families get stated on their journey to emergency preparedness, they just need to figure who will need food and how long they want to be able to get by without having buy food or go shopping. Many of the products on www.areyouprepared.com have shelf lives of up to 30 years, which means you will not have to worry about replenishing your food supply very often and can rest easy knowing you are prepared.
