Tsunami Preparedness and Safety: Before, During and After

The threat of a tsunami remains ever-present in many parts of Asia and the Pacific islands. The massive waves can also strike western coasts of North and South America. To prevent loss of life, it's very important for people in these regions to take measures aimed at boosting tsunami preparedness.

One way to get ready for a tsunami is to obtain a weather alert radio. Although tsunamis aren't caused by the weather, NOAA weather radio does transmit tsunami warning messages. The radio should also receive AM/FM stations and run on either AC power or batteries. It's also essential to learn the signs of an impending tsunami.

Many of the steps for tsunami preparedness vary depending upon the location of a home or office. Humboldt State University in California recommends keeping a week's worth of food and water to prepare for tsunamis and earthquakes. However, this will do little good in a waterfront home that the waves would probably destroy.

On the other hand, a long-term supply can prove useful during the aftermath of a tsunami. Food shortages may occur and debris could block highways. The university recommends keeping foods that don't expire quickly or require refrigeration. It suggests 28 gallons of water to keep four people adequately hydrated for a week.

People in low-lying areas should learn where to head for high ground and how to reach the destination on foot. The initial earthquake may render roads impassable, and streets can easily become congested during an evacuation. The U.S. Geological Survey suggests climbing to the top of a tall tree or a sturdy building if no alternative remains.

The USGS also warns that attempting to bring possessions will often lead to loss of life in a tsunami. To an extent, people can protect some important items by keeping them in waterproof containers. To expedite the evacuation process, it's best to set up a single survival kit in a backpack or carrying case. Keep the kit near an exit.

Home and office tsunami survival kits should contain ready-to-eat food, first aid items, and other necessities. Hand sanitizer and gloves will help to prevent the spread of disease. Various companies sell emergency kits that include assortments of utility, medical and nutritional products. Some even come with small tents.

Many health hazards emerge in the tsunami aftermath. One of these dangers involves drinking water safety. The Centers for Disease Control warns that a tsunami may contaminate wells and public water supplies, potentially causing cholera or diarrhea. Infrastructure damage can also curtail access to water.

Tsunami survival kits must include containers of clean drinking water. A supply of water purification tablets will also help ensure access to safe drinking water. Another important reason to have a good portable radio is that it may provide additional details and recommendations on water safety following a tsunami.

By applying these tsunami preparedness measures, everyone can greatly increase their potential to survive a tsunami and its aftermath without serious physical harm.
