Surviving a Nuclear War

In today's world, the amount of nuclear weapons available is mind boggling. Unfortunately, if a war were to occur, there would be a good possibility that nuclear weapons would be involved. Even worse, nuclear weapons are some of the most deadliest weapons of mass destruction: nuclear weapons don't only completely desolate the area they hit; a nuclear bomb would give off radiation that depending on the size of the bomb, could be harmful to those within hundreds or even thousands miles of the bomb's radius.

Due to the subject's ability to conjure up fear, anxiety, and panic, governments don't always like to address the high possibility of a nuclear war within the next 50 years. However, just like saying, "The truth will set you free", in this case, the truth can save lives. As a nuclear bomb would be so devastating, not a ton can be done to prepare for a nuclear bomb, but there are certain actions that can be taken if a nuclear bomb were to hit an area. As with any natural disaster, the best chance for survival is through planning.

Shelter is Key:
An area providing shelter from the bomb and radiation would be the most important tool in surviving a nuclear war. No matter where one is, if a nuclear attack were to occur, it would be necessary to seek shelter immediately. Buildings constructed out of brick or concrete are safest as they offer protection from radioactive material. If one is nearby, a multi-story building with a basement would be the safest shelter during a nuclear attack. However, if in a large multi-story building without a basement, it would be safest to remain in the center of the building versus the highest or lowest floors. Studies have shown that even homes and or buildings of any sort would help prevent exposure to radiation.

Cars would not provide adequate shelter from a nuclear bomb. Those potentially in cars during a nuclear attack would be advised to seek better shelter immediately.

Food, Water, & Supplies:
If a nuclear bomb were to occur and citizens were forced to take shelter, food and water as well as other supplies found in a survival kit would be vital. Although it would be ideal to have a designated shelter area complete with food, water, and survival materials, one never knows where they and family members would be in the midst of a nuclear war. It can be a good idea to have an extra survival kit that can be readily available and easily carried to a shelter.

A Game Plan:
As with so many other emergencies and disasters, having a plan for the family is imperative. Know where family members would meet if a nuclear attack were to take place; make sure that all family members have a way to get in touch with one another in the face of an attack. Don't wait to decide on a shelter. The right shelter could save lives.
