Safeguard Your Documents

Natural disasters and emergencies have long-lasting effects. Once the damage has been surveyed and families begin the recovery process, they may find that there they face unexpected obstacles in filing insurance claims or repairing their home. Many important documents are stored within homes, and by the very nature of being paper, they are susceptible to fire, flood and wind as well as simply being lost. With some simple preparation though, families can safeguard their important documents and information so they can focus on recovery, not paperwork.

The first step is to create a list of all the documents you may need in an emergency. This can include, but is not limited to: passports, birth certificates, social security cards, insurance policies, emergency contacts and medical and financial records. Next, backup these documents up. While many times only the originals will be valid for transactions, having a copy get help in getting replacements and getting transactions started. Paper copies are simple, and can let you store all your important documents in packets in different places to ensure at least one makes it through the disaster. Scanning the documents and storing them on a flash drive can also come in handy since a flash drive is more portable and can be carried on a keychain or lanyard at all times, not just when an emergency occurs.

Keeping the actual papers safe means finding a safe, accessible area and insulating them from the elements. Use the Waterproof Document Container to keep them safe from floods and leaks, and make them portable with a lanyard. Keeping them safe from a fire means storing your documents outside of the home or in a fireproof safe. Safeguarding documents from a thief is just as important, since you do not want all of your vital information stolen or missing when you need it most. You can use the Waterproof Document Container to store your documents and then hide them by burying them or putting them in a container with foodstuffs to foil would be identity thieves.

Storing original documents outside of your home is an option for the more security minded. Safety deposit boxes may be the safest bet, and most safe deposit vaults in banks are built to withstand natural disasters, so even if your home is destroyed your documents will be safe. People that do not live near a bank or do not wish to use a bank for any reason can still keep their documents safe outside of their home by giving copies to trusted friends or family members, or putting them in other buildings or in shelters on your property. They can also be buried in the Waterproof Document Container underground in a backyard or garden, as long as the location is clearly marked and not somewhere that is likely to be dug up. You can read about other safety and preparation methods in the How to Prepare For Any Disaster books so that you can be completely ready for anything that comes your way.
