Preparing Your Family For Emergencies

Emergencies come in all different forms, and they almost never give warning before they hit. Whether it is a natural disaster, an accident, or a health epidemic, an emergency will affect the lives of many people. Even though emergencies are unpredictable, there are still a number of things a homeowner can do to prepare his or her family. Getting prepared now can save a family a large amount of heartache and despair. Taking the right steps before a disaster strikes can also save lives. The following information contains steps that a person can take to prepare the family for a disaster:

1. Get Educated

The first step in preparing for a disaster is to get educated. The individual should conduct research on each type of disaster and study how it affects the community. Knowing how each situation will affect the community can help the person to develop the proper combative strategy. If the homeowner lives in an area that is prone to flooding, he or she should conduct the most research on flood situations. A person who lives in an earthquake area should conduct research on earthquakes and their effects. Ideally, each person should perform cross research so that he or she is educated in several dangerous situations. That way he or she can devise a strategy that may work in various situations.

2. Develop a Safety Plan

After gathering facts and information about various disasters, the homeowners should converse with family members and come up with a safety plan. The family should discuss where they would go if disaster strikes. For example, if a tornado attacks the area, the family may decide to seek shelter in the basement. For a hurricane situation, the family may plan to migrate to the nearest shelter or to a friend’s home. These things should be discussed long before disaster strikes. The worst time to have to make a decision is in the face of danger.

3. Create a Survival Package

After the family members consult with one another on the proper escape route, they can begin putting together a survival package. A survival package should contain enough items to keep the entire family alive for at least 72 hours. Water is a key element of any survival package. A person can survive up to several months with water alone. Canned foods and food products with long shelf lives are also recommended for survival packages. Items like crackers, cereal, and dried fruits are perfect items for disasters. The homeowner should be sure to pack a can opener for easy access to canned items.

A survival package should also contain some form of artificial light in case the electricity goes out. Flashlights will provide a temporary source of light. The flashlight should be packed with several packs of unopened batteries. A small battery operated transistor radio will help the family to keep in touch with news reports.

Finally, a first aid kit should be neatly placed into the survival kit. Ambulances and medical personnel may not be able to access the area for quite some time. It is best if the family has care items available to aid anyone who is injured.

A family should prepare themselves for a disaster as soon as possible. Being prepared could be the thing that keeps everyone safe in the worst of situations.
