Preparing For a Hurricane

Hurricanes cause devastating damages as recently witnessed in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast of Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. Hurricanes are seasonal in the southeastern part of the United States with the peak period being from mid-August until late October.
They are categorized by intensity on a scale of one through five. One is the lowest threat while five is the highest threat. When meteorologists predict a hurricane they state the path the hurricane is likely to travel and the category of the hurricane so that people can prepare accordingly.

Winds will reach up to 95 miles per hour in a category one hurricane with a storm surge of four to five feet. Damage will be minimal with unanchored mobile homes being the most threatened. Each category intensifies until category five is reached. This category is the most catastrophic with winds more than 155 miles per hour. Homes and businesses would be destroyed, vegetation ruined and massive flooding would take place. With the potential for this type of devastation, preparing for a hurricane must become a way of life in this region. The following actions should be taken to prepare for a hurricane:

  • Develop a family plan that details where you will go if told to evacuate, how to protect your home, and what to take with you. The plan should include provisions for staying should the impending hurricane not be forecast as severe enough to warrant evacuation. Also include escape routes, designate the safest area in your home, store water and plan for food needs. All family members should be well versed in the family plan.
  • Prepare a pet plan that includes having your pets implanted with ID devices and deciding what you will do with them in case of impending disaster.
  • Prepare a disaster supply kit. Items should be included that you may need for medical attention, food, water, and other necessities to either ride out the hurricane, or take with you if you evacuate.
  • Have materials on hand to fortify your home. This would include plywood to cover windows or hurricane shutters. Yard items that could become hazards during high winds should be properly stored.
  • Keep important papers such as insurance paperwork and family identification paperwork together in a safe location so they can be readily located if you have to have fast access to them. They should either be stored in a water proof container or wrapped in plastic. Keep cash and credit cards in the same location.
  • Designate an out of town friend or relative as a contact person and keep them aware of your current situation at all times. Make sure that significant relatives and friends are aware of this contact.
  • Have a weather radio, multiple flashlights with extra batteries and a fully charged cell phone.

Most importantly, if you are told to evacuate, do so. You prove nothing by placing your family in harm’s way. Preparing for a hurricane includes making wise decisions.
