How to Prepare for a Drought

Tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms and floods are the first weather-related emergencies most people think of first. However, inadequate precipitation is also a weather emergency that can severely impact your family’s well being. It is possible to prepare for a drought, but it does require some forethought and planning.

Consider storing drinking water for your family members and pets before tackling large-scale issues. The bare minimum is one gallon per person per day. Two gallons per person per day is a good practice to follow because you have some built-in excess capacity to cover leaks and spills. Droughts usually occur during prolonged hot weather as well. Perspiring heavily will increase your body’s demand for fluids. Store some extra water just in case.

Many people stash away a few gallon jugs of drinking water under the kitchen sink or in a closet. That’s fine, but buying those jugs and bottles can really add up, especially if you have many family members for whom you’re prepping. Using water-filled recycled plastic milk jugs is not your best choice, either. Their plastic is gradually broken down by exposure to UV rays, resulting in water damage to your home and a loss of water crucial to your family’s survival.

You can store water for cleaning and watering your garden in just about any plastic container that’s never held chemicals. When it comes to your drinking water, though, you need to use a container made of food-grade plastic. The blue color isn’t essential, but it does stand up better to UV radiation.

Keep a few of our blue storage cubes http://www.areyouprepared.com/5-Gallon-Sampson-Stacker-p/8302.htm on hand instead. Each holds five gallons, more than enough to provide a one-day supply for two people. They’re also stackable, so you can fill the containers and store them in an unused corner of your basement or garage.

One warning note here: these are heavy when filled. One gallon of water weighs about eight pounds and a filled cube weighs 40 pounds. A week’s worth of water for a family of four, eight filled cubes, weighs a whopping 560 pounds.

If you have enough extra space with a concrete floor, you might consider one of our larger water storage tanks http://www.areyouprepared.com/Water-Storage-Tank-s/32.htm that hold up to 500 gallons of potable water.

On the whole, ordinary tap water from a chlorinated public source probably doesn’t need the addition of chlorine or other chemicals to maintain water purity. If your drinking water comes from a well, you may want to consider adding a few drops of unscented bleach to each gallon.

Water needs to be rotated every six months to a year. When it’s time to get rid of last year’s water and replace it with fresh, don’t dump it down the drain. You can use it for washing dishes, flushing the toilet and watering houseplants.

If there are natural water sources on your property than never run dry, consider storing our http://www.areyouprepared.com/Deluxe-Package-p/rwdlx.htm to use if the public system goes offline.
