Make A Plan
Emergencies can take all shapes and
forms, but they all have one thing in common: They will, for the most
part, be out of your control. When there is a fire in your home or a
tornado coming across the fields, you will not be able to do anything to
stop the event from taking place. It will be all that you can do to
make sure that you and your loved ones are safe. This is why it is
crucial that you make a plan before the emergency happens.
When you have a plan, everyone will be able to react quickly. For
instance, consider what it would be like to wake up and find your home
filled with smoke from a fire. You would be terrified, and you would
only have a few minutes to get everyone safely out of the home. If no
one knows what to do and so they are all running around and panicking,
valuable time will be wasted. This will just put you in more danger. If
everyone knows where they are supposed to go and what they are supposed
to do, you will all be able to exit the building as calmly as possible.
You can all gather at a predetermined meeting place to make sure that
everyone got out, and you can then work on contacting the fire
department. Having a plan can literally save lives.
It is wise to make a plan for any situation that may come up, no matter
how unlikely it seems. For instance, you may not think that a hurricane
will strike your costal town because one has never done so before.
However, you need to know what to do if one is approaching. It is better
to have a plan that you never need to execute than to find yourself in a
dangerous situation without any plan at all.
There are a number of different items that you can use as part of your
planning process. For instance, you may need to have emergency power
systems that can turn on if an ice storm breaks the power lines to you
home. This way, you will still have heat while you wait for the power to
be resorted. Emergency power systems can also turn on lights during a
house fire so that people can use the escape plan. Furthermore, you
should stock up on water and food that you keep in your basement. If
your plan to escape a storm is to retreat to the basement, you must have
provisions there so that everyone can stay healthy until help arrives.
When you make a plan, the most important thing that you can do is to
make sure that everyone knows what it is and knows what they are
supposed to do. This understanding is crucial. You need to talk to all
of your family members and go over the plan so that they do not even
have to think about it during an emergency. They can just react.
CREATING YOUR DISASTER PLAN
Where will you & your family be WHEN IT STRIKES! Work? School? Home? Traveling? Will you know
What to do and where to go? THE 4 STEPS TO SAFETY 1. Find Out What Could Happen in Your Area.
- Find out what your community’s warning signals are, what they sound like and what you should do when you hear
them.
- Learn about the disaster plans at work,
school, daycare and other places where your family spends time.
- If you have animals,
find out about animal care. They may not be allowed in
some places during and after a
disaster.
- Find out how to help the elderly and disabled.
2. Create a Disaster Plan for your family.
- Meet with your family and discuss what types of disasters
could happen in your area and what to do. (Page 25)
- Discuss the steps of evacuation. (Page 22)
- Choose 2 places to meet family members:
- Outside your house if
members are home.
- Outside your
neighborhood in case you can’t get to your home. (City Park, church, school play ground, etc.)
- Ask an out-of-state
family member or friend to be your family’s “Contact Person”.
- After a disaster, communications
can be difficult. Many times it is easier to get through to your contact person out of state than to make a local call. If your
family members become separated in a disaster, have them
call this person and let them know where they are and if all is well with them.
3. Practice and Maintain
your plan
- Conduct fire and
emergency evacuation drills.
- Quiz your family every six months so they don’t forget.
- Test and recharge fire
extinguishers.
- Check/rotate food &
water in your evacuation-kit every 6 months.
- Test smoke detectors
monthly. Change batteries every 6 months.
- Remember to always remain calm. Panic causes accidents.
4. Important Phone Numbers
Post by each phone.
