The Essentials for Long Term Preparations

While the United States government and many disaster organizations recommend a three-day emergency kit, some people want to be prepared to survive in a long term emergency. Natural disasters, terrorist attacks or biological attacks could takes months or years to recover from, and people will need to be prepared to survive for more than three days. Making long term preparations and stocking up on essentials before an emergency occurs is the best option for people that want to be ready for anything.

Food
The most immediate need for people in an emergency is having enough food stored and the resources to replenish this food. Every person or family should have enough food to last each person for at least three months, but preferably longer. In addition, there should be resources to grow and/or catch food as well. Seeds that are being stored to be planted for gardens need to be stored so they do not spoil and should not be hybrid or genetically modified, as those kinds of seeds will only be able to be planted once, and there should be plenty of variety in the seeds so that all essential nutrients and minerals can be provided, like in the Garden Survival Seeds - 20 Varieties pack.

Water
Water will be needed for cooking and cleaning and bathing, but it must be clean and purified water. Stored water will eventually run out so water filtration and purification systems will be crucial to maintaining a clean water supply. Water needs to be stored in containers like the 185 Gallon Emergency Water Storage Tank that are clean and sturdy so it can survive disasters like earthquakes or falling debris. Once the stored water has run out, replacing it will require something like the Katadyn Pocket Microfilter that can purify water at a rate of one liter per second, or the Potable Aqua purification tablets to use when the microfilter is not available.

Medical Supplies
In a long lasting emergency, it is unlikely that doctors or hospitals will be available to care for the sick or wounded. Having a well-stocked first-aid kit and supplies can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency. It is possible to buy a pre-packed emergency Survivor Emergency Kit-1 Person , or to build a personalized one with anything from a Influenza Protection Kit to a toothache kit. At the absolute minimum, every kit should include disinfectant, gauze, bandages, splints, iodine, scissors, water purification tablets, gloves and medical tape.

Emergency Power
Losing power during an emergency means not having to do without or supplying your own power. A simple solar charger can supply power during a sunny day, but a portable solar charger like the Goal 0 Scout 150 Adventure Kit will store this power for use at any time. Larger emergency power kits are available, with up to 20,000 available hours of use from the Goal 0 Base Camp Kit that has been tested in some of the most extreme environments on earth and will certainly be able to handle any emergency situation.
