How to Prepare for a Famine

Food is quickly becoming a commodity that no one can ignore. With skyrocketing gas prices becoming a social norm, the days of cheap food are coming to a close. Climate change, GMOs, and high gas prices all threaten the health and voracity of our agricultural system, and it has created an issue within the food supply that alludes to possible food crises on the horizon. If the worst case scenario happens, and there is a true-blue famine in the cards, would you be able to weather the storm? If not, don't worry-- there is still a lot that everyone can do to enhance their ability to ride out a famine with relative comfort.

Primarily, people need to start bulking up on their reserves. Dried foods are a great place to start, but food preservation doesn't need to stop with them as well. There are many different ways to preserve foods for long-term use, and it's important to use a good balance of these techniques. As far as accumulating these foods goes, that's an entirely different issue altogether. The two most popular choices are self-canning and drying of foods, and bulk purchasing of preserved foods. Both have their pitfalls, but they both have their own distinct positive aspects as well.

When it comes to self-canning and preserving, there is the obvious self-satisfaction aspect to consider. There truly is something to be said for preserving food with your own hands, and that can really be its own reward. However, there is no way around the immense amount of time and work it takes to can and dry the amount of food needed for a stockpile that would see you through a famine. Even for one person, you are looking at weeks of work to get possibly a half year of food. For some, the pleasure of the work itself is enough of a payoff to take this route. For others, there simply aren't enough hours in the day.

This huge time investment is a major reason for the popularity of bulk pantry kits among self-sufficiency proponents. The fact is that most people simply don't have the time to devote hours to canning and preserving every day, only to be left with a product that will still have a fairly limited shelf life. Most of the more commonly available methods for home food preservation cannot guarantee the same shelf life as professional preservation methods, meaning the food needs to be “cycled out” more since it doesn't retain freshness. These kits also allow for a certain level of spontaneity, meaning that you can put off the purchase until you actually think that something bad could be on the horizon. All in all, bulk survival pantry kits are a convenient solution to a serious issue.

No matter how you do it, there's no question that everyone should take steps to prepare for food shortages in the coming future. As a matter of personal security, it's only common sense to take steps that ensure the stability of your food supply.
