How to Prepare for Terrorist Attacks
Preparing
for a terrorist attack may be more of a mental preparation than a
physical one. You don't have several days notice as you might with a
hurricane or other major catastrophe. Yet you can't live every day
wondering if something is going to happen and being afraid to live your
normal lives. There are things you can do, as with other severe weather
emergencies, that can put you at ease and keep you in a state of calm in
case such disaster does arrive.
Always having an emergency kit at hand can make you feel at peace day by
day. Keep a box of non-perishable food items packed away somewhere that
you can easily get to when needed. Canned goods or dehydrated foods,
water, and a can opener can be kept stored away for long periods of time
without spoiling. If you are stuck inside your house, or have to leave
your house quickly, these items will come in handy.
Make sure, as with any other emergency, that you have a communication
plan or meeting place planned. If you get separated, plan on how you
will try to contact each other if need be. Perhaps the separated parties
can contact a mutual friend, or have an assigned spot to meet up when
possible. If you have relatives or friends who live in another area,
they would make for a good contact. If you happen to get evacuated with
little or no notice, be sure other family members know where to meet up
at a later date to be sure everyone is safe.
You should keep all important documents in a small safe or portable case
that you can easily grab to take with you if you have to leave quickly.
You may not have time to think about what you need to bring with you,
so always have the important things readily available to grab and run.
If you have time to pack quickly, just grab essentials. Throw an outfit
in a bag for each person, and try to think only of those things you can
not live without or do not want to lose. Pictures or family movies are
something you can't replace. Household items, for the most part, are not
essential and can always be replaced.
If you have children, keep a bag easily accessible in a closet or other
spot that has some clothing they do not wear daily. This can be grabbed
at a moment's notice to take with you. If you have a baby, keep a diaper
bag with a few essentials always ready to run.
For children that are in school, be sure the teacher or principal have
your emergency contact number in case you have to leave without getting
in touch with them first. Perhaps you could give the school the same out
of town family number so they can keep in touch.
Preparing for a terrorist attack is really just having yourself ready at
all times to move quickly if you need to do so. Long term preparation
can include the purchase of a bomb shelter, or buying respiratory face
masks in case of air poisoning. But having items set aside on a daily
basis can ensure that you are always ready to take action, no matter
what comes at you.
