HOW SAFE IS YOUR HOUSE?
Chimney Fires, are all
too common, especially in the cold winter months in some places. These
types of fires could be so easily avoided just by taking a few simple
precautions. Most people with fireplaces, do not realize that you
should have it completely cleaned out AT LEAST once a year depending on
how much, and how often you use it.
Grease and Oil, are also easy fire starters. If you cook with grease or
oil on a regular basis, make sure that you store it properly in a
tightly sealed container so that there is little or no chance of it
catching on fire. Sadly sometimes these accidents are not always
avoidable, but if you take the extra few minutes to do this, you might
never know if it did the job or not.
Keeping things like gasoline away from heat sources where the heat could
easily catch on fire, is another one that not all people think about
when it should be a no brainer.
If you find out the hard way that the mice and rats have invaded your
house or office, chances are that they may have started eating through
your electrical wiring. This is a disaster that is just waiting to
happen. If you have a wire exposed and the smallest spark hits it then
you will easily have a fire on your hands that could grow out of control
very quickly.
Overloading electrical outlets is also a fire hazard. If you plug too
many plugs into one outlet then it will become overloaded and could very
well start a fire. You may think that using a power strip is helping
to avoid this because it is plugged into the wall, and other things are
plugged into it, instead of just two things being plugged into the
outlet you could now have as many as 7 different pieces of electronic
equipment, all being powered by one single outlet. This could easily
not only blow a fuse, but too much overload could easily cause a spark
that could eventually turn into a fire if not caught quickly enough.
Running wires under rugs or carpets, may look professional, but the
static electricity from the rug or carpet to the cord could potentially
start a fire. This is one that not many people seem to think about, and
realize just how serious of a situation it could potentially be.
Fix leaky gas connections immediately. If you smell a gas odor, call
911 IMMEDIATELY to have the gas shut off and get it repaired as quickly
as possible. Remove any matches or other items that could potentially
cause this to turn into a fire. If anyone in the area is smoking, you
will want to inform them of the situation as well so that they can
quickly and carefully put out their cigarette, or cigar.
If you live in a place like California, that is prone to earthquakes,
you will want to make sure that your bookshelves, and any other large
furniture items or appliances are mounted to the walls to prevent them
from moving across the room in the shaking and possibly hurting someone
in the process.
Before any disaster, you
should inspect your home and eliminate any potential hazards. In an emergency, ordinary items in your home can cause injury and
damage. Anything that can move, fall, break or cause a
fire is a potential hazard.
