Home Safety & Security
What makes a safe
home? General home safety and security are achieved by taking basic
precautions. The most obvious is having an in home security system
installed. It should be one that allows for full monitoring of the home
from multiple points of view. Therefore, these are the basic steps to
help protect your household from burglary, fires and other unwanted
intrusions. Most home safety and security issues are avoidable with
planning by the home owners.
Theft and robbery can be prevented easily with the following simple
preventive measures. First make sure all locks on windows and doorways
are in good working order. Replace anything that could lead to easy
entry into your home, no matter how small it seems. Do not leave spare
keys hidden outside or under a doormat, this is the one thing burglars
look for everywhere. Dead bolts and multiple locks are the best defense
against break ins. Even when home these measures should be secured. Also
when you have an unexpected knock at the door, always check who it is
before unlocking it. It is therefore wise to install a clear and wide
angle peephole, buy one to replace that tiny one most homes have.
When you are away from home, follow all the already mentioned
guidelines. If you do not have a dog or other protective animal on the
property, leave the TV and several lights on in the home. Turn off
telephones, so the burglar does not hear an unanswered phone to signal
no one being home. Make sure all curtains and window blinds are shut
completely. Forward or put a hold on your mail and do not leave notes to
anyone on the front doors. Finally, if you have an active security
system make sure it is armed and in working order before leaving for any
length of time.
Fire safety precautions are very simple, but must be adhered to be
effective. Have your street address clearly posted for emergency
vehicles to see from the street side. Have a clear and rehearsed escape
plan for your family in the event of a fire. Make sure that your home is
fire proofed by making renovations that are up to fire code, keep
electrical outlets in working order, clear combustibles out of garages,
dispose of trash regularly and install smoke alarms in all areas of your
home. Also remember to check the batteries on all safety devices at
least monthly. These should be part of the regular household checklist
and safety procedures that the family knows. It is best to have a fire
drill at least two to three times a year.
If you follow these general home safety and security guidelines, your
home and family should be kept safe from harm this year. Security begins
at home and safety results from attention to small details. Home safety
and security are the best thing you can give your family. All it takes
is planning and using your head to make a home sweet home.
