Earthquake Safety & Preparedness
Many parts
of the world prove vulnerable to earthquakes, such as China, Mexico,
Italy and Turkey. The Federal Emergency Management Agency warns that 45
U.S. territories and states face significant earthquake risks. Strong
quakes can destroy buildings and kill thousands of people. Such
disasters cause mudslides, fires, avalanches and landslides, according
to the Encarta encyclopedia. It's of utmost importance to learn about
earthquake safety and preparedness measures.
Earthquake Preparation
It is essential to prepare for earthquakes in advance; people often
receive no warning that this type of disaster will occur. An emergency
survival kit will help to limit post-earthquake hardship related to
power outages and infrastructure damage. The Center for Earthquake
Research and Information recommends keeping a minimum of three days
worth of supplies, preferably 10. It advises people to store between two
quarts and a gallon of water for each person daily.
Ideally, a family of three would set aside 30 gallons of water for
maximum disaster preparedness. The CERI also urges people to retain
first aid kits, precooked foods, paper plates, plastic utensils, gloves,
and sets of tools. Some individuals may benefit from keeping extra
medication and a spare set of eyeglasses as well. A whistle proves
useful for attracting attention if trapped. Unlike shouting, it won't
cause excessive inhalation of dust.
People in earthquake-prone areas should take general home safety
measures as well. A house or apartment ought to have working fire
extinguishers, smoke detectors, multiple exits, and a telephone on each
level. Heavy objects must be secured to prevent them from falling over
and injuring people. No one should sleep under a light fixture that
could detach and fall from the ceiling in an earthquake. Avoid using
tall bookshelves or cabinets without doors.
Earthquake Safety
It proves especially important to learn what to do during an earthquake.
FEMA suggests crawling under a strong desk or table and holding on to
it until the ground stops shaking. People should avoid windows and keep
out of elevators. It's best to remain indoors. However, the government
recommends that people stay outside if they are outdoors when the
earthquake begins. Move away from buildings, poles, trees, wires and
overpasses.
After the earthquake ends, inspect your home for damage. If necessary,
switch off electricity or natural gas to the entire building. The CERI
urges people not to overload the telephone system; don't make
non-emergency calls. Even if no serious damage has occurred, it's
important to prepare for potential aftershocks. Although nothing is
certain in an earthquake, these preparedness and safety tips can mean
the difference between life and death.
