Be Prepared For the Next Big Earthquake

Every year in October, California has a dedicated day called The Great Shake Out Day. Everyone in California knows that we have earthquakes and the big one could be just around the corner. Yet not everyone in the state has readied him or herself or prepared their family for a future disaster. A week before the California's earthquake day, the media sends out through television, radio, and newspaper on what to expect on this special day. Emergency books and emergency kits are available for homes, schools K-12, Non Profits, Organizations, Business, State and County government facilities, hospitals, and people who have disabilities. The goals of these emergency books are to educate all citizens about the Drop, Cover, and Hold procedure.

Being prepared is the first and second of seven steps of emergency preparedness. Check your home for safety. Check the foundation, plumbing, secure the strap for the water heater. Secure bookcases to the walls, secure the television and stereos. Secure anything that looks like it could fall and hurt you or a family member. If you are not sure about your home, have a home inspector go through and a handyman to fix what you can't fix. Buy earthquake insurance.

Make a plan of evacuation is the third of the seven steps of emergency preparedness. Practice your earthquake drill with your family. Assign duties to each member of the family, practice the evacuation plan no less than once a month. Have your dog's leashes, cat's kennels or other pets kennels ready for the pet's evacuation. Know what to do if you can't locate your pets. Schools have emergency preparedness procedures in place for earthquake disasters. Your evacuation plan needs to include what to do when family members are at work and school.

Gather and place your emergency supplies in a safe place is the fourth of the seven steps. Your earthquake home survival kit needs be filled with extra clothes per family member, water for three days, a water purification kit, three to four days food for each family member. Food like freeze dried or dehydrated foods stored well in the earthquake barrel. Food for your pets, medicine, extra clothes, flashlights, batteries, hand crank radio, waterproof matches, lantern. There are smaller survival kits in backpacks should you need to run for it.

Knowing what to do when the earthquake hits is the fifth step. Drop, cover and hold under a sturdy table or if you are not near a table underneath a counter ledge until the shaking stops.

Checking out the area where you live is the sixth step. power boxes and gas meters should be turned off if the area you live in sustain major damage. One home with a leaking gas pipe can ignite the homes next to it. Check on your neighbor's safety.

Communication is the seventh step. If you have power turn on your radio or television for further information regarding the earthquake damage in your county, then call your insurance agency
