Compact, High Enegry, Survival Foods
While most
survival foods will provide enough energy for the average daily routine,
there are times when you may have to carry your food with you, or may
be doing strenuous work that requires extra energy. In either of these
situations, it is important to either be able to carry emergency foods
that will give you the maximum amount of energy with the lowest amount
of weight or to have supplements on hand that will give you more energy
and enable your body to use the available food to the fullest extent.
Compact, high energy foods are those foods that provide a high number of
calories and/or fats in a small package. They are most useful for
survival kits when you will be traveling or away from home, and will not
have access to your larger food storage supply. These high energy
survival foods are common in 72 hour emergency kits and survival
backpacks, vehicle emergency kits, and added to day-packs or carried by
hikers, backpackers, and hunters as part of an emergency kit.
Some of the most compact options are the food bars and food and water
packs included in our survival kit. These provide 400 calories per meal
and are approved by the US Coast Guard, because these are the same types
of bars typically used for emergency food in lifeboats.
MREs, or meals ready to eat, are also common. They take up more room
than the food bars, but provide a full meal and a variety of foods in
each meal. For those who want something similar, but aren’t found of the
military-style MREs, the pouches of backpacker meals offered by
Mountain House are a very popular alternative.
