What To Do In Case of a Chemical Spill Shelter-In-Place
There
are at least forty thousand chemicals used in everyday commercial
manufacturing. Most of the chemicals are subject to accidental spillage
or leaking of gases that can cause harm to the lives of humans and
animals. The air becomes toxic with the chemical. There may not be
time to evacuate the community. Go indoors as soon as you are notified.
This is called the shelter-in-place system.
When is a hazardous material spill close to your community and schools,
you may not have the time to evacuate. If you are at home at the time
of the accident, you will need to move inside your home. Bring all your
pets inside with you. Shut all the windows and doors. Lock the doors
and windows. Place towels where the air gets in. This is usually at
the base of the window and the crack at the bottom of the doors. Use
duct tape on the windows and doors if you have too. Quickly close down
the vents to the cooling and heating system and the fireplace damper.
Turn the radio or TV on for further instructions. Do not answer the
door for anyone. Protect yourself and your possessions. Do not leave
your home to pick up your children or family members. Stay in a room
with few or no windows. Wait until you hear the all clear signal before
you venture outdoors. The all clear signal will come from the
emergency broadcasting stations on the TV and radio. Police in
helicopters may broadcast the all clear signal. Firefighters and/or
police may knock on everyone's doors to spread the information that the
contamination is contained and it is okay to go outdoors again.
Schools have emergency response plans for any kind of disasters. You
should know ahead of time what the school procedures are. Tell your
children ahead of time to listen to their teachers during an emergency.
Once the administration knows of a chemical spill, the school will be
closed to everyone. No one may leave and no one may come on the school
property. Students, teacher staff, and administration will immediately
go indoors to a pre-designated room. Telephones will be available for
parents to call in and check on their children. The school emergency
plans have been activated and will stay activated until the all clear
signal has been given. Only then will you be able to pick up your
children.
Toxic chemical spills in a community happen mostly on the freeways after
a accident. A trash dump might catch fire and fill the air with toxic
plumes of smoke but it only last for a few hours. Same with staying
indoors during the emergency, it can only last for a few hours.
