Are You Ready?

We are living in uncertain times. A natural disaster, fire or terrorist attack can occur at anytime. One of the major mistakes that people make is assuming that those catastrophic things will never happen to them. When a disaster strikes, most people’s first instinct is to panic. However, the key to surviving any type of disaster is to prepare for it beforehand. The question is are you ready? If you are not, below are some of the things that you can do to prepare for any type of disaster.

Make an emergency kit

If a disaster strikes, a person could be without power and water for days. That is why it is so important for people to prepare an emergency kit. The emergency kit should contain batteries, flashlight, bottled water, non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products, child care items and first aid supplies. It is also wise to make sure that the kit contains enough supplies to last at least three days.
Practice drills

One of the reasons that so many people panic when a disaster strikes is because they do not what to do. Families should make sure that they practice a drill for a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, fire, terrorist attack and any other type of disaster that can occur. Emergency drills should be practiced at least once every few months. The more one practices, the better.

Learn CPR/First Aid

One of the most important things that people can do to prepare for a disaster is to learn CPR and first aid. When a disaster strikes, it may take emergency medical technicians several hours to arrive on the scene. CPR is a life-saving skill that helps revive a person whose heart has stopped beating. First aid is any form of emergency care that is given before professional help arrives. Getting certified in CPR and first aid is relatively simple because there are a number of non-profit organizations that teach those skills. A CPR certification lasts one or two years. A first aid certification lasts three years.

No one likes to think about all of the disastrous things that can strike at any moment. However, it is best to go through life expecting the unexpected. The question is, are you ready or will you be ready if a disaster suddenly strikes? If you have prepared an emergency kit, practice several drills and have received certification in CPR and first aid, the answer to that question will be yes.
